Aviva College is a relational learning community for young people whose education has become interrupted, complex or uncertain.
We offer a different approach to school and a new pathway when it is most needed, partnering with students, caregivers and families to create an environment where every young person is known, valued and supported to thrive.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to journey alongside young people creating places of belonging and safety, where every student’s inherent worth is affirmed, their growth is nurtured, and they are supported to discover a future filled with purpose and possibility.

Our story of Education
Aviva’s story begins in Western Australia, where Alta-1 was established in 2002 with a different approach to education.
In 2015, Alta-1 expanded into Queensland, establishing its first learning community in Caboolture.
From the beginning, the Queensland College team worked with young people for whom education had become disrupted or difficult. Some carried home or learning experiences that had made school challenging. Others needed a smaller, more flexible environment where relationships, trust and belonging could be rebuilt.
It wasn’t always easy work. But the College team saw the value of creating a community shaped by safety, care, connection and genuine relationships to make space for students to learn and grow.
Over time, a distinctive kind of school community took shape: intentionally small, deeply relational and grounded in Christian faith.
Today, as Alta-1 College Queensland becomes Aviva College, that foundation remains.
Why 'Aviva'
It emerged as the College team considered not only what young people may need when they arrive—safety, care and a place to belong—but what might become possible from there.
At Aviva, having hope doesn’t mean expecting every story to unfold in the same way.
Growth can be gradual. Progress isn’t always linear.
Sometimes the part we play in a young person’s life is significant; sometimes it is simply helping create the conditions for the next step.
We believe every step matters.
Grounded in Christian
faith
At its heart is a belief in the inherent worth of every person. It calls us to extend grace, build relationships, remain hopeful and continue to see possibility in every young person who becomes part of our community.
These convictions guide who we are, how we educate and how we serve our community.
A school built around community
Our learning communities are intentionally small, creating space for students and staff to know one another. Many operate in church facilities rather than traditional school campuses, giving each location its own character and creating spaces for learning, connection and recreation.
Our staff bring different backgrounds, experiences and expertise, but share a commitment to walking alongside young people with care, patience and hope.
The result is a school designed not simply as somewhere students attend, but as a community in which they can belong.
As Alta-1 College Queensland becomes Aviva College, our new name clearly expresses the hope at the heart of our community.
Our name may be changing, but what sits at the heart of our community remains: inherent worth, belonging, growth, hope and purpose.
As does our deep conviction that every young person’s story is still unfolding.
